Aggregate Industries UK approached us, following some other health and safety films we created for them, to produce a film telling the harrowing story of a near miss at their Torr Works site in Somerset. Dramatising near miss experiences are often the most powerful of health and safety stories – and for this, Pukka would have direct filming access to not only the young man who almost lost his life, but also his family.
We shot for two days, split between filming at Torr Works, and at Callum’s family home where we interviewed his wife. The shoot crew comprised a producer, director, camera operator, and a sound recordist. Reconstructed scenes of the accident add a sense of jeopardy to the film, while interviews with Callum’s supervisor, and a colleague, deliver the internal perspectives on safety priorities, and vulnerabilities, at Aggregate. Filming Callum with his wife and young child meant that the film could potently remind viewers of just how much is at stake when safety at work is not treated as an essential value.
