The Bank of England commissioned us to produce a short film to launch the new polymer £20 which features artist JMW Turner and was issued in February 2020. The film needed to be short, exciting and show off the note itself and also the featured person and quote.
To create our film we turned to the note itself for inspiration: Turner as one of Britain’s most revered artists and his quote “Light is therefore colour” was our creative starting point.
But we wanted to showcase more than just Turner, so we decided to take the audience on a journey through a magical imaginary space; one part Turner’s 19th century studio and one part Brick Lane meets Savile Row, in order to celebrate all that is best about British art, photography, fashion, music and design. To do this we built a four cornered art-space with each section representing the best of British Creative disciplines from photography and art through to fashion, film, music and architecture. A motion control rig then followed the flight of a new £20 (added as a fully digital object) through this space with multiple lighting states being used for the final composite.
