The FCDO needed an educational resource for use in UK schools nationwide, as part of PHSE lessons. Travelling abroad for the first time as a young person requires knowledge around healthcare, international laws, as well as more practical advice. We were commissioned to produce short films for use in lessons, as well as an accompanying lesson plan for teachers, and print design handouts for students.
Notoriously resistant to adult messaging, this audience required an approach that was at once capable of carrying significant amounts of information whilst engaging and personalising in an authentic, non-patronizing way.
The key element which won us the project was an innovative visual approach using a 360° ‘mini world’ approach to the filming. This was achieved with a camera rig utilising 6 Go-Pros. This echoed a youthful aesthetic while complementing the theme of ‘the world in your hands’.
To encourage engagement in the school environment, the resource was divided into four films with activities after each that the teacher could adapt. In addition to producing the films Pukka Films wrote and designed the schools pack and student question sheets.
The project was well received by our clients at the FCDO, while delivering a stimulating and innovative suite of films for our target audience. It is currently available for download from the TES site, the PHSE Association site and from the FCDO itself.
